I like the Arcam Alpha7SE, its clean, crisp & has good bass depth, but it does not enter the realms of proper audiophile quality. The first Arcam I purchased had a transport problem, the second had a noisy power supply and the third and final sample retained a fair ammount of power supply noise (although less than the second sample).

A new DAC board and a badge change meant the Alpha 7 could be transformed into an Alpha 8. The 7/8/9 and 7se and 8se all have the same main board inside. The 9 has a second board with a dcs ring dac and a separate analogue output so there's certainly a lot more inside than the 7 but I don't know quite what's going on in the 8.
